Volunteer Lake County

Welcome to Volunteer Lake County. This is a new website designed to generate interest in the new FamilySearch digitization efforts in Lake County, Ohio. Volunteers are needed to help prepare documents for imaging by unfolding and flattening documents and re-folding and re-filing those documents after imaging.

FamilySearch has arrived, set up the camera, and has begun digitizing. If you and/or your group would like to help with  this project, we would like to hear from you. Please fill out the contact form to indicate your interest.

On Site Training

We have just learned that a team from FamilySearch will be on site to train volunteers on how to properly handle and prepare documents for imaging on Monday, February 27 in the a.m.  We realize that this is short notice.  If you are available and would like to attend the training, please leave a message via our contact form at https://volunteerlakecounty.wordpress.com/contact/ and we will let you know where and when.

If you are unable to attend, don’t worry about it.  Several volunteers have already committed to attend the training. Someone will train you when you come in to volunteer for the first time.

Please let us know if you intend to come to the training. The training session will be in a non-public area of the facility and we will not be able to accommodate drop-ins.

Removing Staples from Old Documents

Melissa Barker, the Houston County, Tennessee archivist has written an excellent post on Removing Staples Like an Archivist. Her advice comes at an opportune time since we will certainly encounter many documents with old paper clips and rusted staples. Melissa recommends using an archival micro spatula to pry open the prongs of the staples. We will have the spatulas on hand for volunteers to use as they prepare probate documents for imaging.

Removing Original Fasteners from Archival Documents also discusses removing old pins from documents. Many Lake County probate files were secured with straight pins.

2016-11-30-12-32-33If you are thinking about volunteering, I’m sure you are wondering about parking. The project work space will be in the basement of Victoria Place on the square in Painesville. A parking lot is available behind the building. The lot entrance is on St. Clair Street directly across from the LifeSpring Christian Church (53 South St. Clair). At the time of this writing, parking is free.
